Mick Potter - an outsiders view : Sat Sep 25, 2010 12:06 am
As an outsider looking in, can anyone please enlighten me as to why Mick Potter hasn't been retained?

It's my own view that he has done a sensational job at your club during what is very much a difficult, transitional period.

On paper, your squad had absolutely no right to finish above Leeds and Warrington this season...and that was before the serious injury to Soliola and the fact that you haven't been able to field a regular halfback pairing owing to injuries to Eastmond, Wheeler, Lomax and, the man who I regard as your best player, Pryce!

Then to get to the Grand Final itself...amazing!

If there is any justice, Potter should win the coach of the year award...I find it absolutely staggering that he was not offered a new deal!

He was always only here in the short term. He was brought in to help in the transitional period because of his talent at bringing through and developing potentially good young players into very capable first teamers. I also believe that it was always his intent to go back to Australia, although the move to Bradford might suggest he wasn't quite ready/able to do that, perhaps because there were no jobs available?

Personally I believe Mick has done a great job, and exactly what was required of him, in fact given the extremely difficult time we've had with injuries and the faith & work he has put in the young lads I'd say he has outdone himself. There will of course be naysayers but some of those (rightly or wrongly) based their misgivings over Potter on the dour style of rugby we played last season.

Because he has no charisma.

Saints fans would rather finish 5th and have a coach who jumps around at every oppurtunity.

He will be a massive loss and I feel sorry for Sizzler who will have his own "Sizzler OUT" thread by April.

The new young dynasty of super saints is coming to a ground near you.
Welsby-Dodd-Simms-Eaves-Rizzelli, not Eastmond...the future is coming.

Hope some of the Mick Potter "knockers" on here will come on board and be counted.

Predictable. Near enough every play we did was the ball to the first receiver and then he would give it either back inside or outside to a forward to drive it in, and then we wonder why Hull managed to get 3 and 4 in the tackle.

Saddened! wrote:
To those mocking the OP, it's not a knee jerk at all. People, those with any sense at least, have questioned Potter since he was announced as coach. He didn't have sufficient experience, he doesn't have a personality and is completely clueless tactically.

Rughead wrote:
Potter has turned us from "The Entertainers" to a team that happily trundles the ball forward and then makes a hash of the last tackle. Our pack isn't big enough to burst up the middle, yet up the middle we go. The Saints of old would through the ball around and entertain the crowd, but Potter has us playing a boring, ineffective brand of football. His tactics are poor and he capped it off by putting Roby on the wing. Something has to change ! Now !!!

Why? Saints fans in the main are clueless. There are people like Gaz and FearTheVee who keep their feet firmly on the ground, but the majority on here have been so spoiled by success that if we arent winning by 60 at half time, including length of the field tries going through 43 different pairs of hands and our coach running through the crowd high fiving everyone then the coach needs sacking.

The fans dont deserve someone like potter and he wouldnt because, hes the most professional coach we have had in years, but id love it if he stuck two fingers up at the fans.

The best attacking team in superleague (tries and metres) for the last 2 or 3 seasons would say otherwise. Saints have not had there regular half back pairing for most of the season, so the team has had to adapt and play to there strengths, from the pack.

Try reaching a GF without both first choice half backs then you can talk about tactics.
