I think the first check shouldnt be the salary cap, but to make sure that clubs are breaking even. If they are, then the second check should be the salary cap. We have seen numerous clubs sticking to the salary cap, but making huge losses. The game has to be sustainable, and at the minute, it isn't.
The problem with that though is that at the moment there's very, very few clubs who can afford the salary cap as it is without sugar daddy salvation - probably only Leeds and at a borderline Wigan (and hopefully us in a year or 2 once the stadium revenue streams kick in and off the initial debts are paid off) make anything resembling a profit at the moment. RL needs a top league with more than 2 or 3 competitive teams to have any hope of prospering in future - nothing is going to finish the game off quicker than a return to the dark days of the late '80s/early '90s whichever team(s) it is "doing a Wigan". The game needs to be both sustainable and competitive and a salary cap cut is the only way that's going to happen - RL just needs a reality check and to cut it's cloth accordingly.
