Usual stuff, semis, finals etc etc.. probably pick up one trophy this year, not sure we will get the double though.

I think we'll do as well/badly* as we have done the last 2 years. We'll be close to winning things without actually winning anything

For me we have the players.

The big question is on if Simmons is as good a coach as Mcguire at Wigan. I personally think Mcguire has taken good players, and made an outstanding team.

If Simmons can coach as well as Mcguire, then we have the personnel to win the league and or cup. However it is a very tough ask, as the league looks very competitive. So we should be looking at a top 3 finish and a good run in the cup as bare minimum.

As far as our main contenders are concerned, i think Huddersfield will be the dark horses. I personally think they are a better outfit than Warrington. Wire for me are still flat track bullies. Last year when wire came up against the teams situated around them in the league they invariably lost. Also last year were very lucky with injuries. I think if they suffered as heavily as Saints, Wigan, Leeds or Huddersfield last year then they would probably have finished below Hull.

Leeds will be there or thereabouts. They still have the playing personnel, but i think may lose a few early on that they would normally win, due to the absence of Peacock and Mcguire through injury. I expect them to make a late surge, and they would be a good bet for a challenge cup final berth.

The likes of Hull, Hullkr and Bradford are good enough to catch one of the top teams on an off day, but arent really good enough to compete for honours.
Hull in theory have the personnel, but imo are hamstrung in the coaching department.

Couldn't disagree with any of that. My thoughts exactly, I hope we pick up a trophy this year as we have the squad, hopefully we will have better luck with injuries this time around.

Re: Super League XVI - Saints Expectations : Thu Feb 10, 2011 11:32 am
My expectations are that Wigan will be the side to beat. Like CM I believe Maguire made a capable side very good, and with the signings of three quality imports together with their prospects another year older and wiser it is hard to see another side finishing above them.

Maguire seemed like he was one step ahead of every other SL coach last year, can he do the same this year?

I think Saints will start slowly as they adapt to a different coach and start to introduce youth and integrate the three signings. My start bet is that Wigan will win by more than 10 at the weekend. I think it will be a while before they click in attack, but will be in the top three. Hopefully Eastmond will settle, but that said, we still manged ok without him last year and Gaskell is waiting in the wings (although still green at the moment.)

Warrington are an ageing side who still poses some quality veterans in Morley, Briers and Monaghan, but the question is how much they have in the tank. I personally believe they are akin to The Great Gatsby, dreaming of even bigger things, but without realising that their best moments have already been achieved. Their future will depend on how many more juniors of the quality of the likes of Ben Harrison they can introduce before the big boys call it a day.

I think Leeds are hard to predict, but on paper certainly appear weaker and the injury bug – with their side older – seems to have bitten. Huddersfield will be dangerous again and that’s that really. I cant suggest who would fare better out of Hull and Hull KR; probably KR at a push and I don’t see any real quality in Bradford to worry the big boys.
