i hope not. i love the academy at leeds, it bounces when its a good night.
i also saw ian mcculloch in an acoustic set at fibbers, york last month. a venue that holds about 300. it was brilliant.
give me a small intimate venue than a big stadium gig any day

Yep , Same here . I love the smaller venues . Hull has lost a few over the years but luckily the two most important venues in Hull the Adelphi & the Welly have survived .

They were excellent once they sorted the sound out (1st 4/5 songs were hard going near the bar!). It was a real hit-fest.

| I'm still a little unsure about the new arena that is close to completion right in the heart of Leeds city centre. Obviously it'll bring successful acts to the city but I don't see what it's going to do for the local music scene. Yeah, the Kaiser Chiefs might open it up but I can't honestly see anything positive for local acts to get excited about. Someone mentioned on Twitter about the arena's ticketing distribution. It was suggested that all physical sales for the arena should be done via the 2 of the local independent record shops (Crash Records & Jumbo Records). This would be a fantastic idea to build a successful working relationship with the local independent music suppliers. I'm still unsure if this was taken any further than simple internet chatter.
I suppose after thinking about it a little more I'm probably more against the idea of the new arena. Like most cities with arenas (London, Manchester, Birmingham etc) there is a lot of hard work being done with the smaller venues to keep them running successfully. In Leeds I have witnessed first hand a lot of the local independent venues working together with the bands to create a collective of people who incorporate D.I.Y ethics to help promote, support and maintain the local music scene.
This is something I'd prefer to see carry on instead of the construction of a 10,000+ capacity arena that has Russell Howard telling his to disgraceful jokes for idiots that have forked out £40 for a ticket and paid £8.50 for a bottle of coke.

Amount of times I've been to the local shops to buy tickets for the Academy and they dont have any (no disrespect to Crash or Jumbo as love what they do) due to the Academy and its owners keeping majority of the tickets for themselves to flog at their box office or online (or vigalo or whatever its called) is far too many.
From what i've been told the two indie stores will get select amount of tickets for the arena. Crash for instance got a block of tickets for the Kaiser Chiefs gig

| I think the small venues can thrive even with the new arena, I'll only go to the arena to see a band I'm desperate to see, we regularly go to the cockpit (my favourite venue in Leeds) to see bands we've never heard of just to get our musical fix. I also think the Academy is a fantastic mid size venue, I've seen some great gigs there, unfortunately the toilets are a fair hike away!
