Re: Problem players : Wed Jun 19, 2024 8:43 am
Almost all our players, Newman, Smith, Miller and others are all just trying way too hard. The team has no direction or concept of building pressure on an opposition. Rohan's style dictates a boom or bust approach to wonder plays that have such a low success rate with no plan B, so no wonder players are constantly trying to make something out of nothing.

With Newman, Oledski and smith, I think we're seeing players who care too much, but don't have a coach who is capable or willing to give them a framework to succeed from.

I've just listened to House of League with Matt Shaw saying there are lot's of players who don't believe in RS's style of play. You can see that on the pitch. We actually need a coach to come in and take the pressure off the players, give the players a really basic game plan, simplify things back to the basics of RL. Run hard, tackle hard, build pressure, build field possession, force an error, run support lines, commit more men to dominate the ruck, make space for the players around you. Don't try to score on every play.

Re: Problem players : Wed Jun 19, 2024 9:09 am
I don't disagree, however, he isn't getting early ball in space. I think he is trying too hard to have an impact and overplaying. I suspect if he played like he did for England where he simply waited for opportunities (because he was surrounded by good players) that he would be criticised for not digging in and trying to have an impact on the game.

I feel when Newman first broke through, he was bigger in size than he is now and is too lightweight. I wonder particularly in leg size whether he has reduced in size to lower his hamstring risks, which has had a knock on effect in terms of his power and line breaks.

Did you hear this from a reliable source ?
Only reason I ask, is if it was genuine, it would appear a last minute reprieve was given to Smith and makes me think could Blease have intervened and said it was not a good idea. If so would look like GH is giving him a free reign.

Clearly not that reliable :-)

Blease may want to assess everything before making a decision, and as much as it may anger some fans that’s probably the best thing. Starting a job on Monday and sacking people doesn’t look like any in depth analysis has gone on.

C Smith is also maybe doing too much defending, he’s top of the tackle charts.

Which will be partly due to the style we play

That was my first reading of the Blease appointment.

Sacking RS on day 1 would imply Blease had made up his mind based on a largely external picture, perhaps embellished by insights from GH and the two ex-Salford players in the camp. Alternatively, it might imply that GH had already made the decision for Blease, which begs the question why GH doesn't just fire Rohan anyway. If the latter happens, it would arguably create more turmoil and make the job of Blease harder in the short-term, IMO.

While the Hull game was a major disappointment, and may be enough to trigger the departure of RS irrespective of further investigation, I suspect that Blease will want to be thorough in appraising Rohan's contributions and deficiencies, if only that it gives Blease a better understanding of what is needed to turn things around - whether this is playing staff, coaching staff, or wider environmental factors, or most likely, a combination of all these things.

I think the plan was announce Blease, beat Hull, Leigh and London and stumble on for the rest of the season while a new coach is found. We were so awful against Hull and every chance of another shocker on Friday that everything has to be accelerated. With another 2 week break upcoming I'd expect something to happen next week and hope for respectful atmosphere on Friday regardless of the performance.

Re: Smith out ASAP : Wed Jun 19, 2024 12:25 pm
I'm hoping the delay in the inevitable sacking of Smith is due to the desire to be able to announce a successor at the same time rather than piddle about with an interim. Can things actually get any worse?

Looking at who else is missing against Leigh then the answer is quite possibly yes, it can get worse.

Not to play conspiracy theorist - but I will anyway - I wonder if some of the 'missing' players just don't want to play for Rohan? Who knows how toxic it is around the club now.

C Smith needs to simplify it right down and play like a prop even if he's not picked there. Just run and tackle hard.
