The question of what has happened in the past is totally irrelevant to the modern era. Rugby Union players these days have skill sets far different to previous era’s. They are also far better athletes than they used to be. The whoLe game has moved on due to league coached tactics as part of their game. Players wouldn’t struggle cross code these days, from union to league, not like previous.

As The Biffs Back said, the top players in Union are now earning big money, these are some of their supposed salaries https://www.ruck.co.uk/these-are-the-highest-paid-players-at-each-gallagher-premiership-club/ plus England players get circa £25k per game for playing for England, I'd imagine they would make additional money from endorsements etc too Manu Tuilagi would be useful. Further to Gotcha's comment too, the game is policed rather differently than back in the day, sure any converts would be tested out and get plenty of tackling practice, but biff / high tackling wise the game the game bares no relation to what it did, which would make the transition easier.

I'd have no concerns over the transferability (is that a word?) of skill set of a back or half. Forwards are entirely another matter. I don't see a place in RL for any of the front rowers in RU, not the second rowers. Flankers and Number 8 might make RL Props or second rowers.

Given our positions of need, I'm not seeing that much RU talent even worth talking to, never mind signing.

Maybe the threat of us blowing the budget on Ford might persuade anyone dithering over signing that they'd best move a bit sharper.

We are a club that does not have the luxury of picking up a project signing. We need players who can come in and make a difference now.

If we signed ford as a hb then why have Lui, sign gale and hold on to mclelland? Makes no sense.

And of we want him as a hooker then Christ what the hell are we doing. We need a hooker so go get one who players there in RL.

We have more important things to focus on right now.

Oh, and as for the various posts about past union to league switches doing well now we're done this millennium and fee were hbs. Why do we think that is? Because very few are actually good enough to play league let alone in a pivotal role.
