Gale had been injured for two years, goes missing in big games and can only play behind a dominant pack.
Do we want an aging crock? No thanks.
Big game mentality may not be an issues for us for a couple of years so may not be an issues.
Our pack needs work, not sure gale can hobble around behind it.
In all seriousness, he is a big risk for me and we are not in a position to take risks.
This before you even get to what you do with myler.
For me let's get the pack sorted leaving room for the development of our excellent crop of youngsters coming. Get Myler off next season and replace with quality.
If we can swap Gale for Myler relatively cost-effectively I’d be up for it.
Committing our usual generous salary over 3 years for players past their best would be stupid though.
It all depends on the terms for me. Would prefer to see McLelland given a chance to replace Myler on merit if possible.
Agree about the pack. 8 and 9 needs sorting - whether internally through Johnson and Holroyd (or others), or externally.
Question is more about timing. I don’t think this squad will really do anything until the players are at peak, and we are several years off that for the young lads. With that in mind I’d be tempted to manage this next year or two, put the structures and culture in place, keep some powder dry and be patient. We will know much more about gaps and weaknesses in this developing team at the end of next season - what we need is spare cap and quota spots to address those gaps around the core youth.
We have to stop spending over the odds plastering over cracks for the short term, and we need to stop giving long contracts out and getting it wrong. Golding, Sutcliffe, Singleton. JJB, Ablett, Cuthbo, Peteru, Myler, Ferres in hindsight have all been given longer contracts than performances / health deserved. I’d add Lui to that. Tui and Parcell have been cut short also.
