Or he's decided he CBA coming back for 4 games that dont matter when he could stay with family for a much longer time/xmas period and come back in january.

As always details are short,RS either didnt know or couldnt shed any light. that's never a good sign. If family stuff was going on youd assume/hope the club would say its all good instead of players saying hes gone and wont be back.

I would hope the NRL would support Leeds or it leaves the NRL with similar issues where a SL team could poach an NRL player mid contract with no fee being paid. European football clubs can't just poach from PL sides without paying fees.

If Leeds hold his registration he can't play for another club in NRL or Super League. That's nothing to do with being bad bosses. If he wants to play for another Rugby League club then Leeds have every right to compensation.

Give their relationship it’d be odd if Smith doesn’t know the score.

Given it’s a family situation probably right not to draw too many assumptions.

I've no idea what the terms of his contract are, but presumably he could pay it up, become a free agent and sign for whoever, or put in a request to leave, with any future employer having to pay Leeds a sum to release him from his contract with us. Certainly no question of restraint of trade or anything like that. As has been mentioned elsewhere, if the NRL decides to back any player who simply wants to walk away from a contract and play elsewhere, that sets a very dangerous precedent.

This isn’t strictly true. Holding his registration simply means he cannot enter any RFL sanctioned competition. The NRL isn’t an RFL sanctioned competition so their administrators could simply wave him through. The RFL make a big show of working collaboratively in these incidents when it’s an Australian player coming to the UK by maintaining their rulings, but the NRL would do whatever suits them best at the time. Since there is no governing body which both the RFL and NRL submit to there is no way to universally ban him.

It would absolutely be a breach of contract if he did that, but it would be on Leeds to pursue that through the courts.

Hopefully NRL will have some integrity. SL problem I'd that if a SL team wades in on a contracted NRL player he's probably out of favour anyway so the side would be happy for the cap space. Real shame all this as he was playing well in a not great side and had just extended contract. Must be some AUD waved in front of him.

I don't disagree, and we certainly don't know the full story. However, if, and it's still an if at this stage, he isn't returning (it was mentioned earlier that CS was fairly adamant on Saturday that he wasn't) then the contractual side of things becomes, or should become, paramount for the club.

I can’t see the NRL supporting Nene over the entire Super League comp to be fair, outside backs like him are ten a penny over there although I do think he could still play NRL.

I’m sure we will find out what’s happening in due course but losing him would not be helpful towards our push for 2024.
