Caught the last 30 mins. Just to add an element of balance - it's hard for him to influence the game when the hooker (Woolford) continually passes the ball right. Frawley is clearly no world beater, but he just wouldn't get picked if he was the no hoper you are making him out to be.

Exactly.
Regardless of the circumstances, he's just signed a 4 year contract.
He can't just walk out on it and then go and play for someone else.
Just like the club can't just go and cancel a contract.
It works both ways.
Things like this set a dangerous precedent.

Who exactly are you going to get compensation from? No court in Australia would enforce an employment agreement that would effectively force an Australian citizen to live in another country or pay a fine. How would Leeds look trying to enforce compensation when the publicity would be spun as a club trying to make a new father leave his family if they don't want to leave? Do you really think the NRL (or more importantly the Players' Association, which is very powerful in Oz) would back Leeds in that circumstance?

Reality is, if push comes to shove and he says he wants to stay in Australia, we're done. You can stamp your feet and say its not fair, but again, this is not Segeyaro (or Craig Innes years ago). Macdonald can point to family circumstances that would make Leeds like the ultimate bad bosses if they tried to do much.

Fair it may not be. But that is one fight the club would have to walk away from if we want to employ Aussies/Kiwis in the future.

Yep, if he's going he's going. More importantly if we try to hold on as a matter of principle we won't be able to recruit a replacement, which is all that matters going forward.

If he's going then we need to accept it however if we agree to a release there should be a clause that requires a fee is due if he then signs with another superleague team in the period he would have been contracted at Leeds. That supports his family situation but gives some respect to his contract with Leeds.

Wouldn’t we still have to pay him if we have his registration? So he would still be on the cap

Why would we have to pay him? If he's not in the country and not coming back we'd just stop paying him because he isn't able to fulfil his end of the employment contract.

But a foreign company simply could not stop an Australian company employing an Aussie, or force an Aussie to pay them to enable to earn a crust in their home country. That would get laughed out of court as restraint of trade. The NRL would support Macdonald for sure as well in these circumstances. In the meantime no other Aussie/Kiwi would touch us.

The situation would be very different if he tried to play for another team in SL, but that isn't what's been suggested?

Realistically, there are only three games left of the season, and it would actually make sense for Nene to travel back, with his family, ready for pre-season training instead of splitting them up now.

You can't take anything from Rohan's statement as it is as vague as ever, and I'm not convinced he is even being kept in the loop about anything anymore. He appears to be unaware of GH's decisions regarding players.

I wouldn't be surprised if GH has agreed to a leave of absence for Nene, and simply told Rohan something like "by the way, MacDonald isn't available this week. He's still at home.", without giving further explanation. We have seen this kind of miscommunication between them all year.
