Mention of Tony Smith reminds me of an abiding memory.....

After Leeds beat Warrington in 2012 Sinfield (who'd had an immense game) was being interviewed on TV. In the background, waiting patiently for some minutes at the tunnel, was Tony Smith - who must have been gutted.

He wasn't queuing to be interviewed. He was waiting to offer his warm congratulations to the man who'd just beaten him.

Something about dignity. A class act.

All the people praising Smith on here is surprising. They should've been here in 2006, and most of the 2007 season.

He was obviously being considered for a role within the coaching structure, but I doubt he was ever being considered as a possible head coach.

Wrt praising/criticising Coaches & players you can do both in the right context its not a hard concept.

I was here. For a large part of 2007 it was looking like 2004 was something of a blip, and TS arguably should have done more with the squad at his disposal in 2005 and 2006. It was only when his exit was announced that Leeds went on their GF run, including the memorable loss against Saints in which we battered them into submission in advance of the GF.

In 2007 Leeds needed a motivator, to get a star-studded team up at the right time of the season. This is what McClennan and McDermott both provided.

In 2019 we need a coach who can help bring the next promising generation of youngsters through, as both Powell and Smith had a hand in in from 2003 - 2004.
