It's an entertainment product when all's said and done, yes with a large degree of loyalty and backing the team from where you're born . But in a similar way I wouldn't keep returning to a restaurant after years of serving bad food. I know some will find that a weak analogy but theres an intrinsic development of apathy and disinterest after years of poor management and false dawns especially given the context of this club and the resources it has compared to others.
I only get to a few games a year now anyway but I can't help a feeling of detachment when it seems clear that we will not be investing in the short to medium term aspirations to win anything.
Thing is, ATEOTD people have a finite amount of money they can / will spend.
In the days we find ourselves in not everyone will / can justify waxing £60+ on a day out if the product is lousy and it leaves a sour taste in the mouth being constantly told its jam tomorrow. That doesn't make you any less "loyal" or "better" it just means your practical.
Ive always said I dont really care about the result it more the performance and enjoyment gained from attending games with my friends, recently this has waned, people I used to see no longer attend as its boring / too expensive / not worth it. There's been a definite sea change with how the fans now see the club, you can look past certain things when you are on a roll / on top but these things really begin to grate when its the same bland excuses / lines trotted out year after year.
Yes we dont "deserve" to be on top forever, we dont deserve to not have at least some adversity etc but when the same mistakes are being made and people feel like they are being taken for granted then when these things like the ongoing transfer sagas / ground improvements / prices / apparel quality blow up in the clubs face then there's going to very little good will left.
Do I think the club has realised its messed up? I would say it has. Is it on the path to recovery?, again I would say yes but it really feels like to me anyway its taking a daft way of going about things antagonising the fans with this ridiculous silence on signings. Great shout above that the club couldve / still can get back in front of this issue but chooses not to. When even Pete Smith is questioning the club you KNOW they have messed up.
