I don't know if we were actually linked with Laurie, or whether some of us were putting 2+2 together and getting 5, but it's pretty depressing that players are seeming to prefer being a back-up NRL player than to be playing in SL. If you look at Clifford, Cogger, Laurie and Miller, they obviously see being a squad player as a better role!

Gone are the days where SL can attract the top NRL talent from the top clubs, but now were struggling to even sign the players who cover the top players and might only play 5 NRL games a season. Madness!

Not really madness. I’d look at the NRL as a different sport now. Worst NRL team would win SL.

Have we really ever been able to sign top NRL in their prime on a regular basis since moving to summer? Sure, there's been exceptions, but generally, unless a player is ageing, or has been involved in some kind of controversy, then they almost never come to SL if they have NRL offers.

There's a number of issues to consider here. Moving to the other side of the world isn't for everyone, neither is leaving the lifestyle you're used to / accustomed to etc. Family commitments may mean a move is impractical too. However, most if not all of these issues can be overcome if the right money is on offer and this is the elephant in the room. As long as the SL cap is the poor relation (by some distance) of that in the NRL then even a back up, squad role in the NRL will 9/10 trump a move here. Raising the cap isn't a silver bullet, of course, but it's an essential step.
