We have Roberts, Rodrigo, Dallas, Klich, Phillips, Forshaw, Shackleton and Koch who can play in midfield. We have Harrison, Raphinha, Costa in the first team squad who can play on the wing. Yes, Summerville looks a great prospect, but is he good enough to step up consistently over an an extended period at this stage in his development?
Also, it obviously comes down to value for money. Obviously, the money was always there, but the club obviously didn't think the players we were linked with (like O'Brien) we worth the asking price. So for the club to pay this amount of money for James, they obviously think he's worth it.
When you think that he's a British international coming from one of the biggest clubs in the world and has champions league experience, you can make the case for the fee.
