This ^^^^^^^^ Maloney would be a great signing for us even if it's only for a couple of years. Goal kicker, control us around the park and has a bit of 'mungrel' about him as well.

Couldn't agree more (other than possibly Blake Austin if he plays to his undoubted ability). Plus, could be timed well with the allegedly "outstanding" half backs we have in the U16s (sorry, this is all just what I hear from people on here, I have no direct knowledge of them). IF they are thought to be the new McGuire/Burrow/Sinfield (or even just one of them, or Walker) Maloney might be the ideal 2 to 3 year "filler" & mentor for them.

He really is a class player BTW & WAY above what is in SL currently at HB.

If his contract's up Maloney would be fielding huge offers from the NRL. He's in the top 2 or 3 halfbacks, a great goalkicker and has won premierships with two different clubs. The only weakness is his defence, but I'd be very surprised if he moved anywhere.

Hall's been announced as leaving. Shame really, he could have got to 300 tries if he'd played out his career at Leeds, but if its to have a crack at the NRL vs a likely 2 or 3 years of struggle with Leeds, its hard to blame him.

Maloney would be a fantastic signing. I think he'd only come if he was offered a 3yr deal though. Would he get that over in Oz though?

That used to be the arguement years ago, but how many ageing aussies past their best do we actually see now. Everyone used to crow on that we needed more English players coming through as Aussies were blocking their path. Well its no coincidence since the influx of Aussies has slowed down the level of Super League has massively dropped too. For next season is the first time for years genuine NRL quality is coming to SL (Austin, Matagi, Uate, Lolohea).

People use the counter argument about the national team now performing but thats the amount of our lads playing NRL not more home grown kids playing. We havent the structure at junior amateur levels to compete or produce enough talent to compete or fill 1st teams. Thats without the shocking participation levels we currently have.

I'd love Leeds to grab Maloney would be a massive coup in my eyes

Maloney is in the first season of a 3 year $800k deal with the Panthers. He's the current NSW number 6 and is pretty much guaranteed to be either 6 or 7 for Australia this year and next. There ain't a cat in hells chance he's leaving the NRL yet. He does have form for only lasting a couple of years at a club, but he certainly ain't done in the NRL by a long shot.
The biggest name half now available in the NRL is Corey Norman. He's not wanted by the Eels, and there won't be many NRL clubs wanting to take a punt on him due to his off field antics. He'd potentially end up over here, and would be outstanding in Super League.
There are whispers the Panthers need to offload some of their bigger name, older forwards in order to free up funds for their mountain of juniors coming through. Trent Merrin and James Tamou are the ones supposedly available, though I'd expect both to pick up handsome NRL deals elsewhere. Both would be worth throwing the cheque book at though to try and tempt them.

From memory Corey Norman and Segayaro are good friends, so that may limit the chances of a successful approach from GH or SKS...

With Kev holding down the fort here, I really hope the sleeve is dusting off the passport and trying to improve our overseas recruitment.

Less bargain basement Vickery and more premium Webb.

How many overseas spots do we have though? Assuming Lolohea cancels out Moon, we've got Garbutt, Parcell, Cuthbertson Peteru and Delaney. I have never understood the quota rules but I'm guessing we could only fit maybe one more in unless Delaney leaves?

I just can't see us targeting another halfback. Lolohea is the punt there, unless he ends up at fullback. Maybe the lesser Morris as a replacement for Hall?

Anyway, the main priority has to be a revamp of the pack, but how far we can go down that route depends on how many of our current squad stay, as well as whether Leeds are willing to pay to get quality.
