If the club were negligent then they deserve all they get, if they followed protocol then it seems off from Ward.

I`ve mixed thoughts on this matter.
One I feel sorry for all the players that have suffered in the way Ward has suffered.
On the other hand players of all ages go into the game knowing there`s a risk of a head injury or a severe break to bones, muscles etc.
That`s the risk players know and take and some are lucky and some are not.
If at the time Leeds Rhinos followed the guidelines be it a one week break or a 2 week break before letting him play after his first concussion.
Then I am not sure what case Leeds have to answer.
Looking at the dates he played the 2 games and if I recall players could not play for 7 days then it looks like Leeds followed protocol.

It’s all a nightmare this and very sad.

I see Leeds are counter suing a doctor.

I see Bobbie Goulding is part of the mass action, I wonder how many concussions he was responsible for ?

The fact that Leeds are countersuing a doctor suggests that maybe protocols weren't followed in Ward's case, and they are blaming the doctor for that. Ward's issues and symptoms are thankfully very rare, but they do show why clubs need to take the protocols and medical advice very seriously - as Leeds appear to be doing in Morgan Gannon's case for example.

Ward's case is very different to the class action. He's claiming breach of protocols put in place to protect players from a known risk.

Goulding and co are claiming long-term damage from playing the sport which they should have been protected from, with symptoms not emerging in some cases for decades after they stopped playing.

In the case of anyone from the 80s and 90s and probably as late as 2010ish, they are arguing that RU and RL should have known better and done more, which I personally don't think should be a winnable case in court, tragic as their later issues are. But regardless of what any of us think, the class action for RU players is going to be heard soon and will tell us if either sport has a future.

I just still can’t fathom how MMA or boxing can continue if Rugby is such an issue.

Probably because they can’t sue the governing body and they don’t have an employer to aim at.

I’m just not a fan of hindsight. Of course no RL wants to see lads suffering like this. The vast majority don’t. It’s right that the protocols are now in place and more research is needed. It is an inherently risky sport.

It’s sad that Ward is pursuing this but the law will determine.

If he has a case he has a case. Few MMA or boxers would fight again two weeks after a concussion. I think his call is genuine. The club might not be at fault but not many of us have this issue from work. If we did we'd probably try and claim some compensation.

What I can't understand is why he wasn't able to get an insurance pay out. If the club are not insuring the players and just paying on a need basis that is not how an elite sporting club should care for its employees.

Ward has stated on numerous occasions that he has had to fund his after care - if that is the case that is poor on the club's part.

Leeds is a very well run club - this seems an odd position for it to get itself into.

So so sad. Should never had got to this stage. Surely the club should have looked after Stevie better than this? £200k is nothing for life changing injuries..
He Shouldn’t be having to fight for financial package…..
