Let's hope the new Sporting Director does away with this deeply flawed way of defending and anyone that wants to coach it.

Ask Stevie Ward what help he has had from Leeds - next to none. It is a very odd club in some respects. Its priorities seem very skewed and it seems to live in the moment with every considering the long term implications of some decisions. Perhaps the powers that be are incapable of nuanced/complex thought when it come to RL matters?

Tetevano was no great shakes in Aus - no sure what we expected a SOO player. We got what would come to Leeds - as we have now. Croft apart not one of our overseas players who get in any of the better sides in SL. This club cannot attract the overseas talent it needs - I wonder why?

That's cobblers with respect to Tetevano. He was an NZ international with pedigree with some of the best NRL teams. The problem wasn't him, its that we signed him to be a Walmsley style pack leader, when what he was is a very solid rotation prop. The fact he wasn't able to do what we signed him for is down to lack of basic due diligence IMO.

Galloway was more like what you describe. Played for years in the worst team in the NRL and regularly ribbed for being a donkey in the NRL despite having jagged a game in Origin years before. We amazingly thought he could replace one of JP or Peacock. Similar story earlier with Ben Cross.

I take some of what Austin says with a grain of salt. Clearly we didn't spend "30%" of our time practicing short kick offs. But the passive defence thing isn't a myth as some would try to make us believe - its been noted by a lot of commentators,

Tetevano’s only strength IMO was as an enforcer and in his early days at Leeds he overdid it and spent plenty of time banned.
The enforcer was however needed as teams like Catalan and Wigan were knocking our players around easily.
No JP , Keith or Kylie we were a soft touch when the league got used to the fact that Tetevano would not let our players be bullied it improved our team.
We need a better strong running enforcer/captain no nonsense prop forward and a few more of the same stamp to allow our backs to play.

Commentators see Leeds defending in their own half for large stretches of games, and mistakenly assume (IMO) this is a deliberate tactic. We are in this position more often than not because of errors with ball in hand and penalties given away in defence. The simple fact is that we have far too often been unable to respect possession - and that is the root of our need to rely on longer defensive stints.

I'd have to look again at some of the early season games - for example, the HKR game that we lost. If you watch the last few games it is clear that players are moving up and there is defensive intent and even aggression at times. We wouldn't be giving so many penalties away for offside and ruck infringements if we were simply waving the opposition down the field every set!

IMO Leeds need to prioritise respecting possession, moving up the field in yardage, building pressure, and last tackle options. If the coaching team is at fault it is encouraging a style of play that often results in players trying to score from every set. This is the cause of us being on the back foot too much.

Another problem is the lack of hard running forwards to get us out of our own half when we're pegged back.

We give away offside penalties because the players are too lazy to get back on side not because they are so aggressive. I agree 100% with the errors this is a coaching issue - the inability to catch and pass properly under pressure should be an inherent skill of an elite player.

We don't appear to have clever enough players who can spot the gaps for players to run through to make yardage. Just running at the line isn't sufficient you need to find the weaknesses in the line to exploit.

Tetevano played 3 times for NZ that was during his time at the Roosters. Penrith soon offloaded him when they realised what they were getting. Leeds were negligent/desperate in paying the salary they did for a player that wasn't what they thought.

Correct, you can see that, virtually every poster on this site can see that. Unfortunately the coaching staff seem oblivious to the situation. Or maybe they choose to ignore it.

Re: Blake austin part 12, leaving leeds : Thu Jun 06, 2024 1:33 pm
It's only in the last game I've seen us apply any kick pressure whatsoever.

Opposition kickers have routinely picked up an easy 10+ meters before putting boot to ball in every single game, with no pressure applied, allowing their kicks to be more measured/accurate.

Kick pressure is almost an automatic player response, with it being drummed into players from an early age.

To not do it suggests it was/is a definite instruction from the coach.
