There are several problems. I think we'll see more tacklers getting head injuries when they get it wrong. Another problem is that while you might be able to start training Academy players, you've got pros who have learned to tackle one way for decades. It will be incredibly hard for them to forget that muscle memory every tackle.

It seems to me that more of the solution should be around reducing head impacts in training as far as possible and looking at ways to reduce the impact of collisions. Back to 5m? No more than 2 players in a tackle (maybe except on your own line)?

We all know this won’t reduce any risk, and so do the RFL. However in current climate the RFL have to be seen to be ‘doing something…’

We can do more in terms of treating the effects of head knocks, but realistically can only marginally reduce them by using rules which may damage the product on the field. The real question is, can we have sports which result in potential long-term issues? If players are fully informed as to risks and continue to play, will that legally protect the sport? Because ultimately that's all there is.

One thing's for sure though, any ex-players hoping for a lot of money out of the game through the class action are going to be sadly disappointed. We might all wish they could get proper payouts, but RL in England is a financial minnow, not the NFL - most clubs operate at a loss and own no assets worth squat. Good luck getting money out of any insurance the sport may have as well.

If they are ajudicated againt in a class action and they are insured to £10m then that is potentially the size of the payout. I think that they will be happy with 2.5% of £10m assuming there is 40 in the action
