This is a "nothing to do it's the off-season thread" but to get things back on Rugby terms and not the usual stadium drivel, in a hypothetical world where Cas never got relegated - what would your starting 17 be using players from the relegation years that were lost due to relegation/uncertainty over promotion and the current squad. A couple of rules (of course ) the players must not be retired and the quota rules apply. Players that have left since promotion can be included, the extra money lost from going down is reinvested and the club spends the full cap in this scenario.

So here is what I can think of:

Right, there is a huge omission in my section that is obvious, explained at the end, I tried to pick players on their overall, I know Mason didn't impress with us, but on the whole career warrants a place for sure:

Now oviously I have not included Danny Orr, or Rangi, both of whom I would have in there, but technically Rangi would not have been here had we not lost Brough due to relegation and it is doubtful that Danny would have come back at this stage, had we not needed the stabilisation and rebuilding caused by relegation.
Before I kop a load as well, Robinson was on loan with us and surplus at Wigan, I am pretty sure had relegation factor that we could have done a deal to keep him.

Devil's in the detail! I took the question to be what side would we have now, if the relegations had not happened - Quota rules and RETIREMENTs still stand???

I agree, he would be a cert - so would Awen Guttenbiel in the second two.

I'd totally forgot about Blanch but remembered Luke Dyer for some reason

As for Chase etc, think of it as this seasons squad + any players that were lost due to relegation/not being able to afford to keep them (Shenton).

Blanch is easy to forget with this criteria, he wasn't one we lost for any particular reason. I really struggle to find any reason why he was allowed to leave the club (we used Deon Bird on the wing in some games after Blanch left). He really has shown since moving on what a quality player he is.
