InterTown contest wide open
The 2008 InterTown competition remains up for grabs following a sensational 25-16 victory this afternoon by Castleford & Featherstone at Wakefield.
The result takes the visitors from the bottom to the top of the table and leaves Wakefield needing to beat Leeds at Stanningley on Sunday July 6 to have any chance of finishing in the top two.
Castleford, 12-0 ahead after 20 minutes courtesy of two tries by Cutsyke second row Gary Lumb and conversions by Olde Church Tavern scrum half Jimmy Clarkson, never looked back, although Wakefield threatened and were only 21-16 behind as the final quarter approached.
But a touchdown by Castleford Panthers winger Matthew Bacon, who had already crossed early in the second half, sealed a momentous win.
Panthers centre Matty Embleton notched the visitors’ other try and Kippax stand off Andy Walker – the English Country Services Man of the Match – landed a drop goal.
Ackworth substitute Matty Steadman was Wakefield’s English Country Services Man of the Match, while the home side posted a brace for Sharlston winger James Byrom, a try for his club teammate Gareth Davies, and two goals by Eastmoor stand off Adrian Mulcahy.
