God knows why Widnes call themselves the Vikings anyway. For a start, the vikings never went anywhere near Widnes (understandably)
Actually Tony, by 876AD the Vikings held and were settling in most of England as far south as what was then known as Wessex (think SW corner and middle of Southern England (excluding Cornwall) along the M4 corridor as far as Kent) so in fact they did visit the area. surname studies show that in the pre-industrialized Liverpool, Wirral and West Lancashire areas show upto 50% of males as having Viking ancestry.
And furthermore, the Vikings were notorious for pilaging and raping, not to mention they invaded our great land and were our brutal enemies.
An interesting concept bearing in mind that apart from the Welsh we have no true indigenous tribes and haven't had since before Britain was covered in ice and was still landlocked with Europe. The population after that was made up of hunter gatherers who travelled up and down what would be mainland Europe and stopped off here. We as a race don't exist, we are a vast melting pot of Scandinavians, Basques/Iberians, Angles, Saxons and a whole host of others. The Vikings did invade Britain but they had ancestral claims over it anyway (King Harold of 1066 fame was of Viking stock) and to be fair the Romans killed off much of the British races long before the Vikings came. I doubt very much that the Romans made a great effort to win the hearts and minds of the people as they went about their business.
The Vikings were actually great expansionists who settled in the areas that they conquered and brought with them much knowledge and skills including what became the English legal system, copied throughout the world today.
So an extremely sick nickname if you ask me. What would YOU think if Halifax were called "Halifax Rapists" or "Halifax Nazis". Same thing innit?.
You may find it sick, but the Vikings did kick ass over most of England and are responsible for most of the good things that have come out of northern England and that probably includes you Tony.
