Players signing for other clubs before the current season has ended is bonkers - does soccer do it? I cannot understand why the October to February end of season window isn't long or good enough for players to sort out future contracts.

I agree, but even if was ruled out by the RFL/SL, clubs and players would still do it. They twist far bigger rules and get away with it after all, don't they?
