Interesting point on that thread about are Widnes planning on having an "Off" Season. Now they've "Ticked the Box" they could save themselves some pennies by running on a tighter budget for a year, and clear out some dead wood at the same time, then spend big and build up for a potential SL place the year after.

Thats a fair point, however, what if they get the balance wrong and end up in a relegation battle or worse still, relegated? Also, if they want to keep their best players they will still have to pay them top wages. I doubt the players would take a pay cut to help out.

Does anyone else think that this sounds a daft idea?

Surely to build for a competitive team in SL you need a bit of continuity and build the team over a few years.

Also it would be in Widnes best interests now to try make every final and win the NRC every year to stop another team or rival getting there and stop them being allowed to apply for SL, cutting their rivals so to speak.. so having a "clear out" doesn't sound like the best idea to me.

It's no such thing and I can assure you that there is no complacency at the club... plans are afoot to be even more competitive next year although there are issues with operating within the reduced salary cap.

We already have a decent spine of a team and we will be looking at developing the younger players more to bring them through. Some dead wood will be cleared and some players value to the team is being re-assessed in the same way it was last year.

There will be no off year and we will be competing to try to win everything that is on offer to us again.

It's simply a case of a 'mis-informed' fan from another club...

The RFL lowering Widnes salary cap? Thats not a good sign. Their not lowering ours or Barrows.
