Giants Vs Spitfires : Thu May 07, 2009 8:52 pm
Giants record 1st victory at Broadwater
Guildford Giants 32 – 12 Southampton Spitfires Before the game the Giants were handed good news by the Rugby League; an invitation to join the Rugby League Conference London and South. This was unexpected due to Farnborough Falcons pulling out of the competition. This effectively meant the Giants had been promoted before the season had really begun. Giants responded to the good news by starting the game against Southampton on the front foot. The day was sweltering and on a hard pitch it wasn’t going to be easy. Early tries by Adam Cox and Brian Stokes meant Giants pulled ahead by 16 points to nil inside the first half. Southampton responded well in a very competitive game and scored to make it 16 – 4 and the half time interval. Giants carried on the momentum into the second half however with more tries from Cox, Stokes and Karl Grigor. Chris Carroll was also in good form with the boot converting 4 of the 6 tries. Southampton did capitalise on some complacent defending by the Giants to score 2 more themselves but ultimately it was Giants’ day. Chairman Terry Maguire was proud of his player’s efforts “Once again we’ve shown great spirit and this time we’ve got what we deserved. The lad’s have been working hard in training and the fitness shows on the field” Coach Darren Nicholson aka Nico was also satisfied with the result “The players have shown today what they are capable of when they’re all on form. Southampton are an established club and will be playing in our league now we’ve stepped up a division. It was good to see what level of competition to expect and to know we’ll be competitive” The move into the RLC means that Giants kick off the season proper with a home game against Kent Ravens on Saturday 9th May. The competition format will see the Giants facing sides from Oxford, Swindon and London and with the right results could be playing finals against sides from the South West and Northern England.
