"Brian McDermott, with a wry smile, nods when asked if he remembers a specific incident which made him realise he was a prick. 'I do', he murmurs."

It's a paradox isn't it - the unelected, undemocratic House stopping the directly-elected one from imposing grotesque changes to our civil liberties.

Neither are the answer. The HoL should be abolished (I'd replace it with a directly-elected, proportional representation Senate with no stated party affiliations, no whips offices, six year terms, with you capped at serving two terms. Elect a third of them every two years).
But also our rights should be properly enshrined constitutionally, in law rather than at risk of the whim of every wannabe neofascist who inhabits the Home Office and finds people protesting a bit uncomfortable.

This is the great tragedy. The distractions with parties and pandemic and culture war stuff means so little coverage is given to the really important long - lasting policy decisions this corrupt bunch are trying to push through.

This was one of the most insidious pieces of legislation proposed in a long time, alongside its brother the voter suppression bill which we are also now reliant on the Lords for protection from.

If anyone gets upset at people describing the Tories as scum just work through with them the details of these two disgusting pieces of proposed legislation.
