Are they even necessary, what purpose do they serve that the current advice on masks and social distancing etc don't?

The certificate may provide the quickest way of opening up major sporting events /gigs etc
Masks and social distancing, especially the latter, make large groups nigh on impossible.
The grey area would be hospitality.

I get that, but by the time they've been implemented, the majority of the most vulnerable people will have been vaccinated anyway? Would such extreme measures be necessary if the chances of dying from covid are almost zero?

There'll be some that can't have the vaccine for medical reasons - they could be excluded from an awful lot of places indefinitely - but if the rest of us have vaccine passports it might mean those unvaccinated vulnerable groups could come out as transmission is reduced if high percentages have the jab. It'd work for the well organised venues - not at all for the dodgy pub type venues. This is all assuming no new variants come along that get around existing vaccines. Then it's potentially back to square one unless we have boosters that stay ahead of the game.

As I said earlier I think some other countries will insist of proof of vaccination as they rely heavily on tourism and won't want a big outbreak to jeopardise all that.

Possibly the quickest way to allow hospitality to open up, along with major sporting events but, this will be highly contentious.
A "health passport" required for admission, is this the thin end of the wedge or something neccessary to allow us to move forward ?
.

Don't think it's a thin end of the wedge type of thing, more a reflection of a new reality.
I'd say everything should be considered and if it looks like there is a good chance of it working then run with it.

Fed up of it now. Just a pity we can't find a certificate to undo brexit.

Foreign travel - you will not have a choice, you want to go you will need vaccination details a PCR test is only a point in time. I don't have an issue with it. It will be an App on the phone with your status.

I do think we are moving too slowly to open up things but given the disaster the government made of the pandemic I can understand why they are being cautious.

ID cards wont work here IMO

A vaccination certificate is an ID card of sorts.

In any other circumstances, it would be a no, no but, right now, it's about trying to find a way to return to something like "normal"
If the certificate was in app form, there really ought to be a way to allow those who are unable to be vaccinated (for medical reasons) the same level of access.
I think this can only work for certain types of event but, it has to be worth looking at.

I would agree - is it not the new CCTV - i.e. your movement will be tracked via the APP?
