Lib Dems have all but confirmed today that they are supporting the Labour candidate in Batley which will be a modest boost (they got 2400 last election) but possibly a key one given the tight race. As I mentioned on the other thread, where its a straight shoot-out between the Cons and either Labour or LD, the 3rd party are bonkers to proactively campaign.

I agree losing Batley would be a huge blow to KS, but I also agree there's no one else emerging as a viable leader. You just got two agrees from a Liberal. It must be snowing in hell right?

But would losing be a fatal blow ,and if so would the unions /momentum heavily influence the choice of prospective candidates

They'll probably see what side of the fence Chuka Umuna fancies being on this week, or perhaps they'll see if David Milliband fancies leaving his cushy job in NY for another crack at the leadership. Or Andy Burnham.

It saddens me that personality currently wins over all else. We have a PM who is the laziest in many years whose principal job is to gives a thumbs up photo opportunity to the photographer we pay for from one of the two planes we pay for. We are now spending 200m on a boat so I guess he can have further photo opportunities but this time at sea.
The people in Parliament who see nothing wrong in spending 200m are the same ones who were quite happy to let children go hungry for much less.
It now appears that what Cummins produced in respect of BJ was what he said about Hancock but apparently it was due to the stress he was under. I suppose sorting out another divorce can be stressful because he did not care about the number of people who died whilst he was busy elsewhere. Then we have the cabinet with their own litany of failures which if any had backbone would have resulted in them resigning. The rules do not apply to them and Boris needs these people to make him look good and divert attention from his own problems when needed.
If you are happy to continue to support such a government and leader who allows one of the largest number of death to take place, produce a boom in the number of food banks and also let children go hungry but spend 200m on a boat nobody wants then I hope you are proud of his achievements because without you then it would have not been possible.
He is also directly responsible for the freedom day being postponed because he wanted to sign a trade deal with India to show what an independent U.K. can achieve, unfortunately the delay this caused allowed the Delta variant to take hold and here we still are, what an excellent job protecting the public he is doing.

The idea that politics is all about personality, and it being a modern phenomenon is so simplistic, and untrue. Politics is about communication and controlling the narrative, which is something the tories and the right have been good at for a couple of generations now. Labour, on the other hand, have been dreadful at it, although even by their standards, the current leadership, are shocking in this regard.

According to the latest polls, Labour are even more unpopular now than 2019 when they received one of the most embarassing general election defeats ever.

Oh dear

This is likely to change when Bojo decides who is going to have to pay down the national debt.

I wish that was the case but currently the majority appear to be buying into the world according to Boris. I think he could be responsible for the death of a relative and they would believe it was nothing to do with him because he was doing his best.
The downside is that the longer he remains in power he will become more ebullient which will lead to a country no one wants which is based on corruption, privilege and the removal of all citizens rights. We will become isolated only liked because we are a pushover when it comes to trade deals, the current basis is that whatever they want we will give them. I expect we will just become a dumping ground for all those items that the EU have rules for and when it get tough up will go his thumbs and off to the lucrative after dinner speeches he will go leaving behind a basket case of a country.
