It's not that sad. He's had a longer than average life and achieved more than most. 83 is a good age to bow out, and, whilst it will undoubtedly be upsetting for his family, I don't think it's particularly sad news when someone of that age dies.

especilly not when they are in ill health having suffered a number of strokes, condolances to his family, but I'd imagine he was fed up of "existing" in a nursing home.
