The scrap dealers who accept them are just as bad. Supply caters to demand. If the dealers wouldn't accept them then they would never be pinched in the first place.

I always wondered if people had the means to just melt it down before offloading it to the dealers, but to actually go there knowing how much offence and upset this causes and take your time ripping up one after another and still not give a crap? How were these people brought up to be so callous?
Heard one such story on Jeremy Vine a few months ago. Some poor excuse for a human being, nicked a wheel-chair, which was left outside a house, with the door open.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.;
A neighbour of mine had a manhole cover nicked out of her garden just last week a growing problem around here at the moment. She is responsible for it and replacing it is going to be very costly at around £80.
Scrap metal is big business and it depends on the value that week as if things go missing or remain until the price is right.

I've just read that article ... how on earth did thieves get the lead off a huge and very visble place like St Mary Redcliffe without being spotted?
Back to the topic ... whilst I think this stealing of plaques is awful, is it actually any worse than the feeling of invasion and violation that many feel after having been burgled?

I'd guess plenty saw them, but in true 21c mode decided it was not any of their business. I'd guess some may have rung the police, but the police didn't turn up until the following Tuesday as they were all busy doing more important things.

I'd guess in many cases, yes, but whatever the answer, fail to see what it has to do with the thread?
