Chip or remap? : Thu Jan 17, 2013 10:31 am
Anyone know if a chip or remap for an engine actually works?????

Been told that even with a chip it improves fuel consumption and power by a good bit but it seems to good to be true, or every one would do it, wouldn't they?

Thanks for any advice.

I'm considering getting my Pathfinder done, cod'ead has some experience of the subject if I remember correctly.

It either improves fuel consumption or power. You have to be careful with warranties and insurance as well. However, it can unleash the full potential of the engine which is limited in certain aspects to reduce CO2 emmisions, etc.

I have a 6 year old Octavia VRS.

Around 2 years ago I got bored of it, but rather than get a new car I decided to go for a remap. Some guy rocked up at my work, plugged in a computer and messed about for a bit. I paid £250.

He took it for a spin down the dual carriageway and came back grinning. He said each individual car reacts differently and he felt it was one of the best VW engine remaps he had ever done.

The power was upped from 200 to around 240bhp. I immediately noticed it was considerably quicker. I could also rev all the way without hitting a limiter.

The bottom line is yes, remaps work. VW engines are particularly easy to do with excellent results. The increase in insurance was modest.

I had my 140ps 2.0l diesel Passat Sport 4Motion chipped to 175ps by a local VW specialist, using a Superchips remap. They had a rolling road dyno that could handle 4wd (not many can) and gave me before & after power/torque curves.

Performance improved dramatically, and fuel consumption improved by an average 4mpg. The increased power & torque also offered far better performance and economy when towing, especially with a boat & trailer behind it. Insurance company didn't even bother raising my premium.

My only recommendation is not to go for something that looks too good to be true, invariably it will turn out that way. There's plenty of plug-in modules for sale on eBay, avoid them like the plague. Most have already been used and they can only be used once, altough if you've already bought the module, they might just offer you a £25 discount on the required software
