Drills at training : Tue Jun 23, 2009 8:35 am
Hi Guys,

I mentioned this to a few last night, in my opinion there is a lack of cohesion within the team at times. Some players have limited knowledge of set plays etc which makes it difficult for the half back to call a move as they need to look to see who’s outside of them.

A while ago we ran through a few drills at every training session, I would like to revert back to this to improve the skill levels. It wouldn’t need to be long just 15 mins either as a warm up, at half time or as a warm down.

What are other people’s views on this? If it will decrease the numbers coming to training then it obviously isn’t viable but I feel it could improve us as a team and may instil more confidence with some players.

I agree. First 20-30 minutes at training perhaps and then playing a game?

Think it would help new players (like Dan) and old players who after 22 years have forgotten many things ! (like Me) Doing it before a game would make sense as we can then try and put it into practice.

All it needs to be is something simple like going through three different types of set at half pace so people get a feel for where they need to be on the field, so:

a) on receiving a last tackle kick downfield
b) on receiving the kickoff
c) from the scrum

Just run through a set of six to the kick on the last, then a defensive set and repeat. Easy enough to do if people take it seriously.

I was thinking more the basic in play moves. Drop off's, switch plays, run arounds, even face and a55 balls because I think alot of these simple skills have been lost along the way.

Think it was G1 who was talking to a former player who mentioned how backwards LL have gone in terms of skill and I think they're right.

Fair point Kirk. I think the lack of skills though is due mainly to the influx of less experienced players (myself included) who have never been taught the moves and the more experienced/skillful players that have left or don't come very often.
We've known for a while that we are short of half-back players and hooking options.
Perhaps we need some coaching other than a Monday?
Anyone qualified??
Thursdays perhaps, just for an hour?

is that something Tom at the RFL could help with, there must be coaching badges people are going through and could do with some experience?

I have to say though the game at Cas was an extreme in terms of how much we dropped the ball e.t.c and normally we're a lot better than that.

I'd be in favour of say 30 mins of drills and then 1h30mins of a game, i think we'd struggle getting everyone up on another night and then there's the cost. We'd just have to make sure we were ready to start for 7 and not hanging around for 10-15 mins

I believe we have capable coaches within. G1, Gregor and Danny to name a few have been there and done it and know what they are talking about (most of the time  ). We are not that far off at training, some just tend to freeze or panic in a game situations

I do agree with Kev that we should look to start earlier like we used to, especially if we to have drills etc.

Perhaps we can agree a suitable time to meet before the york game (unsure of the kick off time) and have a proper warm up.
