To answer my own question - I've long been of the opinion that the Google weather consists of a man at a regional airport looking out of the window every half hour or so and changing the listing accordingly.

This is true, but usually only by a degree or so. And yes, it is 'firm' underfoot - I just walked past some blackbirds using an angle-grinder and a jackhammer. Google has also informed me the ambient temperature is -9c which really does feel a bit parky. Lucky we're not playing Leeds - they'd feel right at home.
