Energy price cap and inflation : Thu Mar 31, 2022 2:36 pm
So, UK inflation is currently 6.2% (based on official figures) and expected to keep on rising, forecast to rise to 7.4%, before falling back next year and further back to somewhere around the 2% target in 2024.
However, "real" inflation is somewhat higher and it is the make up of the "shopping basket" that is allowing the figure to be published at a lower level.
The first part of the Energy Price Cap is due to be removed from tomorrow, with an estimated £700 being added to the average UK bill.

Mr Sunak mad some changes a week or so ago, which were designed to help the poorest in the UK but, everyone is going to take a severe "hit".

Could and should the Government be doing more to help or, do we all just "suck it up" ?

We are a country of moaners, who moan about the cost of living...

And do nothing about it.

The best thing the government could do to help would be telling the anti frackers to do one

I don’t think even he is even pretending that he is trying to help the poorest in the UK!

After Brexit and COVID and Putin, there’s only so much he and Johnson can do. Johnson is further limited by his profound lack of relevant knowledge, interest and basic competence, of course.

Tbf, they’ve got away with so much awful stuff that if they’re brought low by something that isn’t really their fault, I think I’ll be able live with the irony.

The price cap itself, came about by the Tories "competing" with a Labour manifesto pledge but, since being introduced, the consequences for the cap being lifted have been utterly ignored.
Maybe, someone thought that prices would fall. however, the situation at the moment is almost mind blowing.
The idea of shopping around for energy is now, all but dead in the water and the effects of the change will be severe.

I wonder how different things would have been if gas and electricity were still nationalised industries ??

Also interesting is, whether any "remedies" to the current situation will cause Bojo to back track on his "green" ambitions.

He's going to run out of fingers to plug all of the holes in his political dyke.
